Eco- friendly Holi in Delhi With the onset of the month of March, we know it's time for Holi preparations. It's a colorful festival alright, but MetroMela recommends that you give up synthetic colors and enjoy Holi the natural way. Why give a reason for skin allergies to crop up, isn't it? Besides, let's do out bit for the environment too.
These environment friendly colors can be made at home using natural ingredients. Some local vendors may also provide you with the same. However, if you are not sure about the quality of the holi colors sold by local vendors then you can buy them from well known stores like Khadi Gram Udyog which has various outlets all over Delhi.
You can buy eco friendly and natural holi colors from Ecoexist as well. It is a social enterprise that provides natural holi colors to various stores in Delhi. The natural holi colors are sold under the name of ‘Rang Dulaar’ and are available in boxes. Natural herbs like turmeric and henna are used for making these colors so that they do not harm your skin. Their products are available with selected stores like People Tree at CP, Kalpavriksh at Mayur Vihar, Toxics Link at Jungpura and Gifts of Love at Gurgaon. Kriti, which is a group that believes in conserving the environment, can also provide you with these natural holi colors.
At South Delhi Dilli Haat, special stalls are put up by Society for Children's Development every year which sells special holi colors. These are made by small underpriviledged children who use temple flowers for making the same. The money from the sale of these colors is then used for their welfare. The colors made from the flowers are also sold at their office at Lajpat Nagar and are very popular.
To buy the herbal holi colors in bulk, you can visit wholesale markets like Sadar Bazaar. A number of dealers there can provide you with herbal colors that would not damage your skin and allow you to enjoy a safe holi.

These natural holi colors can be made at home as well. For this you can use natural ingredients like flowers, vegetables, leaves and fruits. Here are some ideas.
- For green holi color, you can use dry henna (without the amla) and mix it with flour. When mixed with water, this can also work as a strong or ‘pucca’ color.
- Turmeric powder or ‘haldi’ mixed with gram flour (besan) in the ratio of 1:2 can be used for dry yellow color.
